Thirty-seven percent of all consumers say they will increase the number of purchases they make online in the next few years.
One of the clearest trends identified in the study is that the longer Internet users spend online, the more central the medium becomes to their lives. More than half of U.S. households have high-speed Internet access
Consumers will spend 21% more online this holiday season than they did in 2006. Consumers will spend $33 billion online this holiday season as compared to $27 billion last season. 80% of consumers will buy clothing and accessories, up from 71% last year; 76% will buy books, up from 61%; and 63% will buy computer hardware and software, up from 46% last year.
Not surprisingly, one of the main reasons consumers shop online is the convenience. 81% said the convenience of shopping whenever they wanted was the main reason they chose to shop online over the holidays, while 77% said they shopped online because it saved time. About 46% of consumers said they shopped online for lower prices. Convenience keeps people coming back to the Internet. It’s available whenever consumers are ready to shop, offers a wide selection and obviates the need to fight the crowds at the mall.
